Science Update #10: Science update for September 29, 2021.

In our first article of the day we look at artistic renderings of projected landscapes and agriculture in the year 2500, in a scenario where global climate change leads to temperature rises of 8 degrees Celsius. Although these projections definitely have a dystopian flavor, they aren't as uniformly bleak as they could be. The art depicts negative effects such as deforestation and infrastructure degradation, but it also includes some notes of grace - nods to humanity's amazing powers of adaptation through technological innovation. We should make sure to note that these researchers are more or less taking a wild guess as to whether these climate predictions will come true or not, but it is still useful to think through the different scenarios. Ideally, we can avoid this level of warming through thoughtful policy development and technological improvements.

The second article we talk about today explores new findings about how DNA supercoiling modifies gene expression. Specifically, new experiments show that propagation of mechanical stresses through a DNA strand during supercoiling causes the correlation of DNA expression in linearly distant base pair regions. This offers an important insight in understanding the complexities of DNA expression.
