The Chinese central province of Henan reported two Omicron cases on January 9, 2022. With a spike in overall coronavirus cases across the province since December 2021, local authorities are trying to speed up mass testing by offering door-to-door testing. The two cases of the highly transmissible Omicron variant were confirmed to have come from the northern port city of Tianjin, the first Chinese city to report the Omicron variant. Two new cases of the variant were reported in Tianjin on January 10. China continues to stick to its zero-Covid strategy to contain the Omicron outbreak as the Beijing Winter Olympics draw near.
